Locks of Love...

This is my second time to donate my hair to Locks of Love! I first donated 11 inches of hair in 2008 and this week I donated 10 more inches! 

What is Locks of Love? Locks of Love is a non-profit organization (charity) that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children. These children are often very sick and suffer from long-term medical hair loss. Each hair donation helps put a smile on the face of a child somewhere in the United States.

Jimmy Carter...

This week we learned all about the Georgia Hero, Jimmy Carter. Did you know that he was once the President of the United States? We learned that Jimmy Carter grew up on a farm in Plains, Georgia. Click on the link below and listen to Jimmy tell you all about his childhood farm. We planned to explore this website at school using our SmartBoard, however the website was blocked. Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day from 
Mrs. McClure's Class!

Our class celebrated by creating fractions from candy hearts! Each student grabbed a handful of candy hearts and then determined what his or her denominator would be. The students sorted their candy hearts by color and then wrote a fraction to represent each color. They also put their fractions in order from smallest to largest. This activity was so much fun and the best part was getting to eat the candy!

We ended our day by passing out Valentine cards to our friends and eating Valentine cookies sent in by Cameron! We hope that you had a wonderful Valentine's Day too!

A picture in the sky...

In Science, we have been learning all about the Sun, Moon, and Stars! We read an awesome book about Constellations and we learned that a constellation is a "picture in the sky." After reading our informational book and discussing constellations, the students had their chance to create their own! The students loved this activity and were able to create some very interesting constellations!

We used black construction paper, silver stars, and a white crayon to create our "picture in the sky." We then wrote a quick caption about our constellation.

Cameron created a dolphin, Charlotte created a flag, and Jose created a car.

Nickolle created a house, Daniel created a heart, and Mariana created a book.

JohnEisha created a pan, Tiona created a rose, and Madison created a heart.

Sofia created a flower and Scotty created a T-Rex.

Making Connections!

During the first weeks of school, I shared my "All About Me" bag with our class. One of the things that I shared was that one of my favorite places is Hawaii. The students became very interested in Hawaii and throughout the school year I have shared many experiences with them. 

One of the experiences that I shared during Writer's Workshop was about hiking on Mount Kilauea - one of the world's most active volcanoes. This volcano is located on the Big Island of Hawaii and has been erupting continuously since 1983.

  

This week during our D.E.A.R. time, one of the students was reading a new Science reader that had just been delivered from Scholastic. The student was eagerly reading the new book about Volcanoes and then excitedly said "I just made a text-to-world connection!" He excitedly showed me that he was reading all about Mount Kilauea and that he was connecting what he had already learned from my experience and relating it to the real world facts found in his book! It is so exciting to see all of the students in our class so excited about Reading!

Fraction Town!

This week our class created Fraction Town! This activity was so much fun as it helped us to review fractions!

To create our Fraction Town, we used the Black and White Fraction Strips found at Super Teacher Worksheets. These fraction strips served as our "streets" and helped us to visualize the equal parts of the whole. 

We then followed these directions to create our town:

• Draw houses on 2/3 of Third Street.
• Draw cars on 1/2 of Second Street.
• Draw trees on 1/4 of Fourth Street.
• Draw bushes on 3/8 of Eighth Street.
• Draw a school on 2/6 of Sixth Street.
• Draw a school bus on 2/8 of Eighth Street.
• Draw a dog on 1/4 of Fourth Street.
• Draw a firetruck on 2/6 of Sixth Street. 
• Add grass and stop signs to your town.

 

 

Did you know...?

Did you know that an octopus has blue blood? This week we finished our Mini-Books about animals and we shared them with our classmates. We learned all sorts of interesting facts about an octopus, a tiger, sea horse, eagle, cat, dolphin, and sea urchin!
